Ghostbusters 3

January 2, 2010

Harold Ramis says he’s going to start shooting Ghostbusters 3 this year. I don’t know what to make of this. I’m okay with reboots — I love Star Trek (2009), I love Batman Begins (2005), I love that Canadian version of the Hardy Boys from 1995 … Ghostbusters, though, is a relic of the 80s. It would be like making Back To The Future IV: Doc Brown Gets Medieval. Or Indiana Jones 4.

Ramis, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd achieved something magical with the first film. The second, not so much — even the actors themselves were unhappy with it. There’s a reason a third film was never made. Until now, I guess.

Five ways it might be fantastic:

  1. All the original Ghostbusters come back, but as — wait for it — ghosts! Looking like Slimer. Bill Murray kind of does these days, anyway.
  2. It’s in 3D!
  3. It’s set right after the events of Ghostbusters 2 (1989), and no attempt is made to explain why everybody looks 25 years older!
  4. Rick Moranis is the only original cast member to return … and this time it’s personal!
  5. It’s a prequel, set in college in the 1960s and starring Zach Efron, Robert Pattinson and Shia Lebeouf! And Bill Murray returns from the future to warn his younger self about a plot to destroy the timeline! And Aykroyd complains that he isn’t in the movie.
