Weather Station 4

December 18, 2009

“What about WS4?” asks Mr. Dapper, a regular visitor to this site. That’s a valid question. There are a whole bunch of Weather Stations, including this one, the on-hiatus podcast Weather Station 3, the boring and rarely updated Weather Station 2 and others.

Weather Station 4 was my experiment in micropodcasting, using the Chirbit service. I liked it a lot. Chirbit, like the iPhone-oriented Audioboo, lets you upload quick hits of podcasting or other audio content. I found the site extremely easy to use … from my end.

From the listeners’ end, not so much. The only way to listen to WS4 was to go to the site, click the player, and stay on the site. No downloading, no iTunes subscribing, no RSS. That lack of user-friendliness pretty much stopped WS4 from continuing.

I’ll probably still use it from time to time when I have something to say, but as a regular podcast, it just doesn’t work. And that’s a shame.

  1. Yeah, that is a problem with Chirbit. You’d think he’d have built RSS into his original structure from the very beginning. As all podcasting platforms rely on it. It’s really the only essential thing.
