So Long, Chris P. Bacon

October 25, 2009

As Yahoo prepares to close down its old Geocities sites, this is your last chance to visit one of its odder addresses: The world of my pal, Chris P. Bacon. Long before blogging and Facebooking and Twittering, Bacon came up with the idea of a personal journal website full of bullshit. A lot of other people followed suit (including the second version of the Weather Station), so you can either thank him or blame him.

Geocities gave everyone the ability to have a website. It was particularly popular with people who wanted to run fan sites and people who wanted lots of flashing GIFs and a really long, strange URL.

Bacon hasn’t updated this site in years, but it remains one of the funnier slices of mid-90s Canadiana you’ll ever encounter. And soon it will be gone for good.

Visit it here. While you can. Be sure to read the comment areas. Some really smart people had something to say. And so did I.

More on Geocities here.
