The resemblance is kind of scary.
If this week wasn’t surreal enough, now I find out I can sing with the King.
A new website, www.singwiththeking.com, will let me, and you, and my mom, even, record a duet with Elvis Presley. It’s part of a promotion for a new CD, Elvis Presley Christmas Duets, which is one of those sing-with-the-dead jobs that are becoming more common these days.
I may not have ever expressed to you how big my love of Elvis is. It’s huge. It goes back to my childhood. I went through a period in the mid-1970s where I told people Elvis was my father (there is a very, very slight resemblance, and also I had sideburns at about age six).
And that’s never gone away. I listen to all kinds of other music, and my favourite types of music are the rather eclectic mix of prewar blues, alternative hard rock, “goth” and 80s hair metal. But I listen to everything in between, depending on my mood.
Dial up my iTunes right now, though, and you’ll see Elvis Presley’s name more than anyone else’s. Johnny Cash is a close second, but that’s a whole other story. No, for me, Elvis is No. 1. He’s always been there for me.
So this opportunity has made me smile; in fact, I’m burnin’ a hole where I lay. I just might take this opportunity to pursue a career as an Elvis impersonator (20 years ago, I could have been young Elvis, or even 68 Comeback Special Elvis … nowadays, let’s just say I would need a white jumpsuit and a towel).
I’m heading over to singwiththeking.com right now, just as soon as I find my big gold Elvis sunglasses. To set the mood, of course.
