Today’s Moron: The Pappu Sweet Centre

October 27, 2008

Today’s Moron is the owner of a kebab place in Wolverhampton, England. Jaswinder Singh runs the Pappu Sweet Centre, which has run afoul of health inspectors lately. And I mean ‘afoul.’

Let’s look at the initial problems:

  1. When inspectors lifted a pan off a stove, they found a dead rat squished flat underneath.
  2. Kitchen employees routinely smoked while working
  3. Inspectors spotted a cut of meat sitting out on on a counter, covered in flies, from which sections were routinely carved to make kebabs

Those were bad enough. But what got Mr. Singh in big trouble was what inspectors found when they made a followup visit a little while later. They walked into the kitchen and found Singh and his employees hard at work, cooking and making kebabs. A few feet away, on an old sofa against a kitchen wall, was the body of an employee who had dropped dead of natural causes in the middle of his shift. Singh tossed the corpse on the couch and told everyone else to keep on kebabing.

I guess I don’t have to tell you that Jaswinder Singh is no longer allowed to work in the food services industry and the Pappu Sweet Centre is closed. What scares me, though, is that this type of blatant disregard for basic sanitation might be happening at other places. Ontario just had an E. coli outbreak at a Harvey’s burger place. It could happen anywhere, any time.

And I have to wonder why the Pappu Sweet Centre was allowed to keep operating after the first violations. Sounds like a shit system to me.

I’ll be cooking at home for a while, I think.
